A local authority in Greater Manchester are recruiting for a Floating Support Worker to work with and assess the needs of homeless applicants and match cases to an appropriate move on scheme within the area.

The Role
The key focus of the Floating Support Worker role is to provide outreach, support and engagement to families and individuals at risk of homelessness, addressing multiple needs and complex cases.
The role involves assessing the needs of homeless applicants, matching them to appropriate move-on schemes, and working with clients with diverse challenges, including drug and alcohol addiction, mental health conditions, and past serious offenses.
This will include the following tasks and responsibilities:



  • Assess and match homeless applicants to appropriate move-on schemes, considering diverse needs like addiction, mental health, and criminal history.

  • Build and maintain professional relationships, acting as a lead professional to prioritize and address identified issues.

  • Collaborate with various agencies to provide flexible, high-quality outreach support, promoting independence and resilience within households.

  • Undertake lone working responsibilities, including visits to clients in homeless accommodations throughout Manchester.

  • Adhere to behavioural competencies, including teamwork, customer service, and delivery, while demonstrating diversity awareness and ensuring equal access and treatment.



The Candidate
To be considered for this Floating Support Worker role you will require the following knowledge and experience:



  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals, expressing opinions clearly and understanding conflict dynamics.

  • Planning and Organizing: Skill in organizing multiple tasks, prioritizing, preparing in advance, and setting realistic timescales for self and others.

  • Problem Solving and Decision Making: Ability to make effective decisions, take ownership, think logically, and provide innovative solutions to problems.

  • Engagement Skills: Empathy, motivation, and effective relationship-building to gain support for achieving outcomes, with respect for different perspectives.

  • Administrative Skills: Literacy and numeracy skills, proficiency in producing documentation, and familiarity with information technology, including databases and word packages.

  • Support Work Experience: Previous experience in support work and move-on support, preferably within a homelessness context.

  • Dealing with Complex Needs: Experience in working with clients presenting complex needs, such as addiction, mental health conditions, and past serious offenses.

  • Safeguarding: Experience in dealing with safeguarding concerns and taking necessary steps to escalate concerns to management and safeguarding agencies.

  • Multi-Agency Collaboration: Ability to develop strong working relationships quickly, particularly with partner accommodation schemes and various agencies.

  • Rehousing Process: Experience in participating in and supporting customers in the rehousing process, maximizing positive housing outcomes.

  • Driving Skills: Candidate must be a driver with business insurance.

  • DBS Check: Must consent to and apply for an enhanced DBS disclosure check.

  • Case Management: For Intensive Support Workers, experience in managing a case load of 20-25 families for 3 months and assessing them as high or low risk; for Support Workers, managing a case load of 40 families for the full tenancy length.



The Contract
This is a temporary Floating Support Worker role, working 5 days per week (35 hours) on an initial 3 month contract, with a good chance of being extended or even made permanent.

After an initial period, there will be the option to work 2 days per week from home.
