Senior Scientist, COVID19 Lab FTC 5 Months, Possibility to Extend

Purpose of the role:

Working as a senior member of the COVID-19 Hub Laboratory, the post holder will play a key role in the establishment, development and operation of the laboratory, and the provision of an end-to-end service, linking the development needs of Industry with the capability and assets of the Newcastle Hospital Foundation Trust to enable rapid adoption of molecular diagnostics into high volume testing facilities.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Laboratory Operations Manager, and working as part of a team, the post holder will have technical charge of a section of the laboratory and will be responsible for organising and participating in the work of the laboratory, ensuring that work is carried out to agreed standards and a high quality.


  • · The post holder will be required to lead on specific management functions such as training, quality and IT or working on assay validation.
  • · In liaison with the senior scientific team and Laboratory Manager, the post holder is responsible for the production of results within specified turnaround times.
  • · Ensure working practice is in accordance with ISO 15189:12.

 · Assist in maintaining up to date ISO 15189:12 documentation.


  • · Ensure adequate stocks of reagents and consumables are available for the efficient running of the section for which the post holder has responsibility.
  • · Ensure that all quality control procedures are followed, and high analytical standards are maintained.

    This includes adherence to regular in-house service and maintenance schedules and completion of the associated documentation.

 · Ensure safe working practices are followed and that staff complies with Health and Safety regulations, completing laboratory and Trust incident forms when appropriate.

 · To undertake, as directed research and development work within the COVID-19 Hub Laboratory.


  • · As an experienced senior member of staff, provide help and advice, in relation to technical problems, troubleshooting etc., to staff working in other areas of the laboratory as required.

Essential:

ü  BSc (Hons) degree in relevant science subject or equivalent qualification

ü  MSc, FIBMS, MPhil, PhD in a biomedical science-based discipline

ü  Extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of Molecular Diagnostic Work

ü  Experience in Research and Development

ü  Proven ability to work independently with minimum direction

ü  Effective computer and keyboard skills including the ability to manipulate simple software packages with appropriate training and an ability to utilise traditional applications such as Microsoft Outlook

ü  Promote and partake in Continuous Professional Development

ü  Alignment to Trust Values and Core Behaviours
