Highways Operative

A Local Authority based in Greater Manchester is currently recruiting for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join their team as soon as possible.


This is a full time, temporary position and the ideal candidate will have significant experience of highway maintenance work and a valid driving licence (category C 1).


The purpose of the role is to provide an essential front line service to all highway users by ensuring the council's highway infrastructure is maintained to a high standard.


The main responsibilities of the role are:



  • Carry out all aspects of highway maintenance across the borough

  • work to precise measurements when carrying out works to highway footways, carriageways, and associated drainage

  • provide an efficient highway maintenance service to other departments and external suppliers within the borough

  • Ensure full compliance with Health and Safety legislation and guidelines when undertaking your day-to-day duties

  • Erect and remove signs and barriers to Chapter 8 requirements

  • Assist with the laying of specialist road materials to the required highway maintenance and construction specifications.

  • Operate associated plant and machinery /powered and manual hand tools in accordance with Health and Safety guidance.


Requirements:



  • Significant experience of highway maintenance work

  • Experience of the utilisation of all specialist highways materials including various bituminous materials.

  • Certificates of competence and experience of maintaining and utilising various plant and machinery, including compactor plates, abrasive wheels, and roller breakers.

  • A knowledge and understanding of relevant Health and Safety legislation

  • The ability to work to precise measurements.

  • The ability to build positive working relationships with teams and customers.

  • The ability to identify and resolve highway maintenance issues.

  • The ability to work to deadlines and achieve the relevant agreed productivity targets.

  • A valid driving licence (category C 1) to allow you to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonne

  • The ability to work flexibly and take part in the out of hour standby rota and provide cover in the absence of colleagues.

  • The ability to embrace new technologies to support the continuous improvement and future needs of the service.

  • Good customer and problem-solving skills.


The client is looking to move quickly with this role and as such are offering between £13 - £14 p/hour Umbrella Ltd (approx.

£357 - £380 p/week NET after deductions) dependant on experience and qualifications.
