Senior Scientific Officer – FTC 9 months to March 2022

Our client, a leading provider of life science solutions are now looking for a Senior Scientific Officer to support their work with Covid-19 testing and clinical trials for a fixed term contract of 9 months, possible extension. This role would suit individuals with a scientific degree and will give the candidate the opportunity to broaden their molecular biology knowledge and practical skill set in a high throughput laboratory.

The role holder will aid the laboratory manager with the setting up, implementation and running of a SARS CoV2 testing laboratory.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific expertise and support to members of the laboratory.
  • Supervision of junior staff
  • Responsible for shift patterns and staff management
  • Knowledge of working in a Class 2 containment.

    Undertaking molecular and laboratory techniques including RNA extraction and qRT-PCR. 
  • Experience operating liquid handling machines would be advantageous.
  • Maintaining laboratory procedures in line with ISO15189:2012 / ISO17025:2019 laboratory accreditation specification
  • Troubleshooting processes to ensure that all laboratory processes and procedures are carried out in line with the laboratory accreditation specifications
  • Participate in the preparation and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and in the review of these protocols when necessary.
  • Participation in internal and external audit and quality assurance.
  • Ensure that statutory, external accreditation and institutional requirements for record keeping of results are met by validation or verification of technology.
  • Ensure that all relevant Health and Safety policies and guidelines are adhered to, and undertake the risk assessment of procedures as appropriate
  • Contributing to the daily running of the laboratory, maintaining levels of reagents and ensuring a safe environment.
  • To undertake other duties as may be reasonably expected by the Laboratory Operations Manager consistent with the nature and grade of the post.

Essential requirement:

  • MSc in life sciences or equivalent working experience
  • Experience of undertaking molecular assays using automated platforms
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and good laboratory practice, specifically in relation to work with potentially infectious human blood and body fluids
  • Experience working within a GcP/GxP laboratory.
  • Knowledge of legislation and good practice with respect to Clinical Governance, Good Clinical Practice and Research Ethics Committees.
