Role: Welfare Rights Officer
Location: Ashton - under - Lyne
Work pattern: 36 hrs, Mon - Fri
Contract Type: Temp ongoing contract

I'm looking for a Welfare Rights Officer to join a wider team of both benefit and debt advisers to support Tameside residents with specialist level welfare benefits advice and appeal representation.

This support will extend to rough sleepers in the Borough including those accessing A Bed Every Night.

You will assist with claims for benefits and charitable funds as well as helping residents to challenge benefit decisions.

The post holder will be expected to provide representation at Social Security Appeal Tribunals up to and including Upper Tribunal level.The successful applicant would need to have relevant, demonstrable experience in providing welfare benefits advice work, including tribunal representation, and a good knowledge of the benefits system, especially in the areas of sickness and disability.

Key Responsibilities

, To provide confidential, specialist welfare benefits and tax credits advice to all Tameside residents including rough sleepers through multi-agency working to alleviate poverty and address homelessness
, To work with colleagues in our Rough Sleepers Schemes to provide benefits advice to address homelessness
, To provide appeal representation at First and Upper Tier Social Security appeal tribunals.
, Provide telephone advice through the Advice Line on welfare benefits and tax credits to include benefit checks and to establish grounds for appealing social security benefit decisions
, To maintain accurate case work records.
, Assist with claims for benefit
, Identify relevant charitable funds and assist in making the application.
, To assist clients in communicating with outside agencies and council departments.
, To refer non-benefit cases to appropriate agencies including referrals for mental health support or referrals into GP services.

, Must have experience of providing benefits advice.

, Experience of representing clients at social security appeal tribunals
, Experience of benefit maximisation work
, Significant experience of delivering welfare benefits and tax credits advice work
, In-depth knowledge of social security legislation, tax credits legislation, housing benefit and council tax legislation
, Ability to prioritise own work, meet deadlines and manage a caseload including a willingness to follow and develop agreed quality assurance procedures
